Founded in 1989, the Center of the American West “brings together, for meaningful conversation and interaction, people as diverse as the American West itself.” The center hosts 30 to 40 public events per year, including conferences and lectures by great western thinkers. The Colorado Chautauqua Association hosts an eclectic assortment of forums and family programs, ranging from storytelling to a presentation on the Gaia theory and global warming. CITY OF BOULDER HOME OWNERSHIP PROGRAM ORIENTATION The city of Boulder’s monthly series instructs residents on affordable housing and using city programs to buy a house in Boulder. CONFERENCE ON WORLD AFFAIRS, annually in April Originally a conference on international affairs, CWA now encompasses music, literature, environmental activism, science, journalism, visual arts, and much more during what The New York Times calls “a week-long extravaganza of discussion and debate.” Held annually in April on the University of Colorado’s Boulder campus, this free, public event features more than 200 nonacademic, cross-disciplinary panels, plenary sessions and performances. 303-492-2525. CU MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY LECTURE SERIES The University of Colorado Museum of Natural History hosts year-round exhibits (see the Visual Arts section for a schedule), lectures and other activities. SOCIETY FOR SCIENTIFIC EXPLORATION MEETING, annually in summer Scientists and scholars from around the world gather in Boulder annually in the summer to discuss UFOs, ESP, consciousness, healing and other topics on the frontier of science. The Stahl Lecture Series, part of the Grillo Health Information Center at the Boulder Public Library, offers four lectures each year.
