Races and Walks, Boulder , Colorado and Boulder County BARKIN DOG DUATHLON, May 9 This “pup”-ular race, now in its 10th year, serves as the season opener for many of Colorado’s multisport athletes. It features a 5k run on a mix of paved and dirt roads, followed by a 30k (18.6-mile) paved bike ride through Denver’s Cherry Creek State Park and across the Dam Road, and then another 5k run. BOULDER BACKROADS MARATHON & HALF MARATHON, annually in fall Runners loop from Boulder Reservoir through Boulder County’s beautiful countryside on dirt trails and quiet rural lanes in this annual event. Finish back at the reservoir for post-race festivities. Full-marathon racers start at 7am; half-marathon racers begin at 8am. 303-859-0244, BOLDER BOULDER 10K RACE, annually on Memorial Day The second-largest running race in the USA gets bigger and better every year. More than 55,000 runners, walkers and wheelchair racers follow the course while more than 150,000 spectators cheer them on. Now sponsored by Dick’s Sporting Goods, the race takes place on Memorial Day, May 25. The state’s largest Memorial Day tribute follows at CU’s Folsom Field, featuring a 21-gun salute, F-18 flyovers and sky divers. BOULDER COUNTY FIVE RACE SERIES Five independent community races join together to offer huge prize drawings for runners who complete them all. BOULDER CROP WALK, annuall in fall Raise funds to fight hunger abroad and at home each fall at the annual Boulder CROP Walk. The walk starts at St. Ambrose Episcopal Church, 7520 South Boulder Road. Canine companions aren’t required for this annual run/walk around the Boulder Reservoir, but they sure make it more lively. 5k and 10k races count as qualifiers for the Bolder Boulder. CHILLY CHEEKS WINTER DUATHLON, annually in winter The Chilly Cheeks Winter Duathlon series is low-key and extremely low cost. Each race in the series has a different format, but all feature approximately 4 miles of road and nontechnical trail running and 10 miles of paved road cycling. Road and mountain bike divisions are offered. 2009 races are Dec. 13, Jan. 17 and Feb. 28 at Cherry Creek State Park, Denver. 303-642-7917. The run loops the scenic CU-Boulder campus, starting on Colorado Avenue in front of Folsom Field. LA SPORTIVA ELDORA TRAIL 10K, annually in summer Formerly called the Indian Peaks 10k Trail Run, this race follows one of the most scenic and challenging routes on the Front Range. NEDER-NEDERLAND 5K & 10K, annually in fall For a real runner’s high, head to the Neder-Nederland High Altitude 5k and 10k, the last in the Boulder County Five Race Series. PANICKING POULTRY 5K, annually in fall Flock to this annual run and walk to benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, held at the Boulder Reservoir. Returning events include the Team Challenge, kids’ fun run, silent auction and holiday food drive. QUICKER QUAKER, annually in winter This race is a Boulder Bolder qualifier and also part of Lafayette’s Quaker Oatmeal Festival. RED ROCK SCRAMBLE RUN/WALK, annually in fall Fives are wild at this annual event, with a 5K run and 5-mile walk to fund scholarships to Native American law students through the Colorado Indian Bar Association. TURKEY TROT, annually in fall Don’t be a chickenrun in the Annual Longmont Butterball Turkey Trot in November.
