Boulder County Hikes, Nature and Outdoor Events
4th Tuesdays: BCAS offers nature programs once a month, with refreshments and socializing at 7pm, followed by the presentation at 7:30pm. The group also hosts field trips, nature programs, bird counts and other events around the county. Fourth-Tuesday programs (see schedule online) are held at 7pm at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Boulder, 5001 Pennsylvania Ave. BOULDER COUNTY PARKS & OPEN SPACE PROGRAMS Boulder County Open Space offers free nature programs, hikes and cultural-history events. Seniors’ Nature Program Series: See Senior Events Through Aug. 22: Reminiscent of an old-fashioned circus sideshow, a new traveling exhibit called Dr. Entomo’s Palace of Exotic Wonders explores the truths, myths and mysteries of the bewildering and often freakish invertebrate world. Sunset Strolls through the conservatory take place at 6:30pm July 8 and Aug. 12. CITY OF BOULDER OPEN SPACE & MOUNTAIN PARKS Natural Selections is the city’s ongoing series of educational programs on wildlife, ecology, local history and children’s programs. CMC’s activity catalog features 3,000 activities including adventure travel, exhibits, service projects, and classes and seminars that cover everything from how to hike, climb or ski to wild plants, birds, painting and geology. Flagstaff Summit Nature Center The center, open through September, is a great place to familiarize yourself with the wildlife, plants and history of Open Space and Mountain Parks. Interactive games and activities challenge the child in everyone, and volunteers are on hand to answer questions. Open 10:30am-4pm weekends. On Flagstaff Summit Road, about 3.5 miles west of Boulder on Baseline Road. 303-441-3440. July 24: Learn to identify local plants for their edible and medicinal properties during this walk from 10am-noon. Meet in front of Pharmaca at Pearl and 17th streets. Visit the website to register. INTERNATIONAL TREE-CLIMBING RENDEZVOUS Shinny on up. This international event gathers tree-climbing enthusiasts, instructors and arborists to share experiences, stories and ideas. Soar over the Rocky Mountains in a solo or tandem paraglider with Peak to Peak Paragliding school. Two-day introductory classes are offered regularly. 303-817-0803. Reconnect with your inner child as you safely shimmy up trees. Introductory climbs, safe for both climber and tree, are open to adults and kids 7 and up at outdoor locations in the Boulder area. Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory Seminars/Lectures RMBO is teaming up with the Colorado Mountain Club to offer programs about the birds and plants in the four life zones in Colorado. Evening lectures on a Thursday night from 7-9pm are followed by an outdoor field course the following Saturday. Lectures are at the American Mountaineering Center, 710 10th St. in Golden; outdoor sessions are at different venues. To register, visit the website; 303-279-3080. Boulder County Parks & Open Space offers weekly sunset hikes that are slow-paced and guided by naturalists who interpret each park’s history, geology, ecosystems, animals and plants. Walks begin at 6:30pm and conclude at sunset; they are suitable for all ages, but parents must accompany children, and pets are not permitted. WALTER ORR ROBERS WEATHER TRAIL This self-guided tour introduces you to the weather and climate surrounding NCAR’s Mesa Lab beside the Flatirons. The half-mile loop extends west, connecting to the Boulder Mountain Parks system. 303-497-1174. Colorado Division of Wildlife workshops teach the skills you need to see wildlife in the area. A short nature walk and hands-on activities round out each four-hour presentation. Summer workshops are outside Boulder County; watch the website for schedule updates. 303-291-7258.
