Boulder County Kids, Children and Teen Events


ART AT BMoCA

As you shop for the many local goodies available the Boulder County Farmers’ Market, kids can take part in free, guided art activities on the front porch of the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, 1750 13th St. Every Saturday June through September from 9am-1pm. THE ART UNDERGROUND

BABY LOVES DISCO

All across the country, Baby Loves Disco is slowly but surely transforming the night clubs into child proof discos as toddlers, pre-schoolers and parents looking for a break from the routine playground circuit let loose for some post naptime, pre-dinner fun. Make no mistake, this is NOT the Mickey Mouse club, and Barney is Banned. Baby loves disco is an afternoon dance party featuring real music spun and mixed by real djs blending classic disco tunes From the 70s, & 80s. Reduced ticket prices for grandparents. BOULDER PARKS AND RECREATION CLASSES

The city’s recreation centers offer classes in sports, arts and more at South Boulder Recreation Center, 1360 Gillaspie Drive; East Boulder Community Center, 5660 Sioux Drive; and North Boulder Recreation Center, 3170 Broadway.

BREAKTHROUGH ARTS, winter semester begins Jan. 26, 2009

BreakThrough Arts’ free classes for teens—including break dancing, Japanese sword, photography and cooking—run during the spring school semester. A final exhibition/performance is organized at the end of the season. 303-443-4474 ext. 4650.

BUTTERFLY PAVILION

Beginning Oct. 3, morph into a “bug brainiac” with the Butterfly Pavilion’s new adventure series. Complete the activity stations with interactive displays that show how bugs are part of our culture and everyday lives; then earn an honorary badge at the end of the course. Bug-A-Pedia is included in the price of admission. CHILDREN'S PROGRAMS AT BOULDER PUBLIC LIBRARY

Kids discover the wonder of words at story programs daily at all branches of the Boulder Public Library. ¿Habla español? Kay Negash hosts a bilingual Spanish-English storytime the first Saturday of each month at the main branch, 1000 Canyon Blvd. Sparky the Fire Dog also visits on third Thursdays. Babies and toddlers get their own special book time assorted Tuesdays (18 months and younger) and Wednesdays (18 to 36 months old). 303-441-3099.

Got a voracious reader on your hands? Encourage your tyke’s literary passion at weekly library-sponsored storytimes. CLASSICALLY KIDS, annually in summer

Classically Kids is a series of interactive workshops for kids 7-11, developed in collaboration with the Rocky Mountain Center for Musical Arts. Each workshop is linked to a Colorado Music Festival concert and includes hands-on activities with an opportunity to meet an international guest artist. COLORADO CHILDREN'S DAY AT BOULDER, April 24

Children get their own special day on April 24 from noon-4pm. Free activities, like interactive live music and games with CU athletes, celebrate children through elementary school age. Parents can also learn about services available to them in Boulder. Children’s Day takes place along Pearl Street Mall, approximately 1300 Pearl St. Rain date April 27. 303-441-1977.

COLORADO MOUNTAIN CLUB

The Colorado Mountain Club offers a Youth Education Program year round, with courses in rock climbing, survival and outdoor skills. See the website for the full schedule. COLORADO SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL EDUCATION

Professional actors work with children at schools and communities across Colorado, offering performances and hands-on workshops of Living Shakespeare. Programs are available for libraries, drama groups and more. 303-492-1537.

CREATIONS ART SPACE

Children paint alongside adults at this new art space. The studio offers drop-in sessions with 18 pre-mixed paints and high-quality brushes. Creations Art Space also offers classes and workshops by local artists. 1740 Cedar Ave., 303-709-6884.

CU SCIENCE DISCOVERY CLASSES & CAMPS

This popular five-week, after-school program offers activity-based science, math and technology classes. In the summer the fun moves outside so kids can explore Boulder’s streams, rocks and animals. 303-492-7188.

CU WIZARDS PROGRAM

Calling all science fans—this longtime free program continues another season jam-packed with discovery and adventure. The wizards work their magic during hour-long programs on monthly Saturdays at 9:30am. Shows are ­designed for fifth-through-ninth graders, but all ages are welcome, and no reservations are required. 303-492-5011.

DOGS ENJOY AFTERNOON READING

CChildren of all ages can practice reading aloud to specially trained dogs in the Meeting Room of the Longmont Public Library, 409 Fourth Ave. Usually one Saturday per month, from 1-2pm. Call for dates; no registration required. 303-651-8477.

FRIDAY NIGHTS WITH BPR

Boulder Parks & Rec invites kids 7-12 to enjoy a night of crafts, games, swimming and other activities on Friday nights 7-10pm at the North Boulder Recreation Center, 3170 Broadway. Dec. 5 is Hawaiian luau night and Dec. 19 is “backwards night.” To register or for more information visit.

EASTER EGG HUNT, April 4

in Lafayette, avid egg hunters aged 1-8 grab their baskets and GO as they look for Easter goodies on April 4 (rain/snow date April 11). After the hunt, hop on down to Festival Plaza for the Downtown EGGstravaganza, featuring fun and surprises including photos with the Easter Bunny and a petting zoo. Ages 3-8 hunt at 10:30am near Waneka Lake; littler ones aged 1-2 search at Festival Plaza at 11:30am. 303-665-0469.

INTERNATIONAL WALK TO SCHOOL EVENT, annually in October

International Walk to School Event has expanded from one week to the whole month of October. It gives elementary schoolchildren, parents, faculty, staff and community leaders the opportunity to be part of a global event that celebrates the benefits of walking (and biking). 2008 will be the 11th year the Boulder Valley School District has participated. 303-245-5931.

KIDS' EVENTS AT CU-BOULDER

KIDS’ FARMFEST AT SUNFLOWER FARM, May through November

Hit Farmfest to feed baby animals, ride ponies, play in a giant sandbox or huge treehouse, collect eggs and more. Farmfest runs May through November at Sunflower Farm, 11150 Prospect Road, Longmont. 303-661-0954.

KIDS’ NITE OUT

The Kids’ Nite Out program provides a safe place where kids 8-14 can participate in age-appropriate games and activities. KNO programs are held at Bob L. Burger Recreation Center, 111 W. Baseline Road in Lafayette, and the Longmont Recreation Center, 310 Quail Road in Longmont, on Saturday nights throughout the school year.

LONGMONT MUSEUM AND CULTURAL CENTER

Discovery Days, a drop-in arts-and-crafts program for kids aged 2-5, runs Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays through the school year, with three sessions each day. Also, check out the educational Discovery Backpacks and the Longs Peak Interactive Gallery, including dress-up costumes and wooden blocks for kids to design their own “Main Street.” Museum admission is free, but a small fee is charged for Discovery Days. OLD FIREHOUSE ART CENTER SATURDAY ART EXPERIENCE
second and fourth Saturdays

Crafty and creative kids 5-12 can take part in free art classes at the Old Firehouse Art Center in Longmont (667 Fourth Ave.). Sessions are the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. To ensure age-appropriate projects, there are now two sessions: 2:45-4pm for ages 5-8 and 4:15-5:30pm for ages 9-12. Classes are free for members; children are also asked to bring a nonperishable food donation for the OUR Center. Registration is required; see website for details. 303-651-2787.

OPEN SPACE AND MOUNTAIN PARKS NATURAL SELECTIONS

This free educational series on ecology, wildlife and local history produces numerous children’s programs throughout the year. 303-441-3440.

PROJECT YES

Project YES (Youth Envisioning Social change) creates leadership opportunities for young people through the arts and service learning. Create a large-scale public artwork about a social issue that affects your life, or take free after-school classes in mural painting, digital arts, civic responsibility and more. 303-666-8211.

RAILS IN THE ROCKIES, Feb. 14-15

Model trains race through the Estes Park Conference Center, and kids can help run the engines. The annual show is held this year on Feb. 14-15 at the center, 101 S. St. Vrain Ave.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN CENTER FOR MUSICAL ARTS

RMCMA programs include lessons in all instruments and voice, early childhood classes, music theory for all ages, and concerts. Tuition assistance is available. 303-665-0599.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN THEATRE FOR KIDS

During the school year, RMTK offers after-school classes in dance, drama, musical theater and improvisation. The company’s 120-seat Magic Playhouse is at 5311 Western Ave., Suite D. 303-245-8150.

...SO THE KIDS CAN FLY!

Kutandara Youth Marimba Ensembles present two shows (2pm and 4pm) on Sunday, March 1, at the Nomad Theater. They are joined by Zimbabwean dancer Julia Chigamba. This free, family-friendly event is sure to get kids and adults up and dancing in their seats. Come early, these popular shows usually fill up. 1410 Quince Ave. 303-443-2969.

TEEN ACTIVITIES AT THE LIBRARY

  • Just Write: Ranting, musing & more. Let it out at writing group. Ongoing, free writers’ workshop meets Saturdays in the Teen Library (Ages 11-14 from 12-1pm; ages 13-18 from 2:30-3:30pm)
  • Teen Art Gallery: Monthly shows of art created by middle and high school students


THORNE NATURAL SCIENCE SCHOOL

Kids go wild for the wetland flora and fauna at the Thorne Natural Science School. Children of all ages track the trails around the marsh during workshops. Other opportunities include Movies on the Marsh and school in-service ecological classes. See website for current schedule. 303-499-3647.

WILD EARTH DAY, April

In partnership with the Wild Bear Center for Nature Discovery, the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) hosts a free public celebration of Earth Day; check website for April date. WOW! (WORLD OF WONDER) MUSEUM

YMCA TEEN ACTIVITIES

YOUNG CREATIVE WRITERS

Play writing games, make word collages and learn hints to make prose and poetry shine in this popular, long-running workshop. Kids from fourth to seventh grade receive advice and encouragement from professional writers in two-month sessions (January-February and April-May) from 10-11am on Saturdays. YOUNG PEOPLE'S CONCERTS, annually in the summer

Colorado Music Festival Orchestra musicians join with members of the Boulder, Longmont and Fort Collins youth symphonies to offer live classical performances of lively music, complete with costumes and narration. There is also a music fair featuring an instrument “petting zoo” and more following each concert. Annually in the summer at Chautauqua Auditorium, 900 Baseline Road. 303-440-7666.

YOUTH FLY-FISHING & RIVERS CONSERVATION DAY, March 7

The YMCA of Boulder County hosts this educational, fun day with hands-on stations including Fly-fishing Equipment & Rigging your Gear, Fly-Tying, Fish Species & River Conservation, Water Quality & Entomology: Trout Insects, Fly Casting, Where to go?
