BARKIN DOG DUATHLON, Annually in spring You’ll wag your tail for this race, Colorado’s most popular duathlon. The race features a 5k run on a mix of paved and dirt roads, followed by a 30k (18.6-mile) paved bike ride through Cherry Creek State Park and across the Dam Road, and then another 5k run. 303-642-7917; www.racingunderground.com. CANINE CLASSIC, Annually in spring Canine companions aren’t required for this annual run/walk around the Boulder Reservoir, but they sure make it more lively. 5k and 10k races count as qualifiers for the Bolder Boulder. A CAUSE FOR PAWS, annually in the fall The Humane Society of Boulder Valley’s annual 5k Doggie Dash race and pledge walk is held annually in the fall. COLORADO REPTILE HUMANE SOCIETY Bob the golden tegu is just one of the enchanting cold-blooded creatures you might meet on a visit to the Colorado Reptile Humane Society. CoRHS special events include an Open House Weekend on June 21-22 from noon-5pm and a Turtle and Tortoise Hibernation Workshop on Aug. 3. It also has adoption days at pet stores around Colorado. First Frog Fridays feature special activities, including “frogtastic” prizes, to help increase awareness of the world’s amphibian extinction crisis and share ways to help. The zoo is also home to 4,000 other animals of almost 750 species, including caiman lizards, trumpeter swans, an Andean condor chick and an enormous aviary of lorikeets. INSECTIVAL, July 12-13 By popular demand, the Butterfly Pavilion & Insect Center’s “Insectival” has been expanded to two full days. Held from 10am-5pm July 12 and 13, the insect celebration includes a pollination relay game, insect olympics, ladybug releases and other buggy adventures. NATIONAL WESTERN STOCK SHOW, annually in January The stock show celebrates its 102nd year Jan. 12-27. This historic Western institution corrals the best professional rodeo cowpokes for two weeks of bucking, roping and tying, and one of the nation’s top livestock shows at 4655 Humbolt St., Denver.
