REAL Awards Category Descriptions

In all categories, the REAL Awards judges add points for community service, sustainable practices and ethical integrity. 

1. AGRICULTURE OR HORTICULTURE 
   This REAL Award recognizes the local farmers and horticulturalists who enrich our community and help make Boulder County sustainable, organic and green.
    
2. SMALL BUSINESS 
   This REAL Award honors a local business with fewer than 25 employees that epitomizes the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit of our local business community. 
    
3. LARGE BUSINESS 
   This REAL Award recognizes a local business with more than 25 employees that supports the community through employment, extensive support for local charities, and sustainability. The judges wanted this award to be given to a business that exemplifies how to do business in Boulder.
    
4. ENVIRONMENTAL HEROES 
   This REAL Award recognizes an individual or business that contributes significantly to making Boulder County sustainable, green and forward thinking in environmental matters.
    
5. OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY SERVICE 
   This REAL Award recognizes an individual or business that makes a unique contribution to the well-being of the community through philanthropy or a contribution of time and effort.
    
6. MOST INSPIRING INDIVIDUAL 
   This REAL Award honors a person who contributes energy and inspiration to the community, and who also, in many ways, embodies the heart and soul of Boulder County. 
    
7. NONPROFIT - HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES 
   This REAL Award honors an organization for recognizing need in the community, and for diligently and selflessly addressing that need by creating an ongoing enterprise that continues to provide help and support to Boulder County residents.
    
8. NONPROFIT - COMMUNITY AT LARGE 
   This REAL Award honors an organization that provides significant support for one of Boulder County’s diverse areas of need.
    
9. CULTURE / PERFORMING ARTS 
   This REAL Award honors an artistic entity that has made a significant contribution to Boulder’s artistic culture. The award focuses on quality of performance, creativity, innovation, and community involvement. It also recognizes an ethic of giving back to the community through outreach, education and special programs.
    
10. RESTAURATEUR 
    This REAL Award singles out one restaurateur for offering spectacularly delicious cuisine; making a contribution to the local economy with jobs and a thriving business; showing a commitment to support locally produced foods; and demonstrating an ethic of community involvement through support of non-profits & community enrichment.
