Boulder Model Railroad Club Annual Train Show
Dec. 10-11: Held in conjunction with the Flatirons Mineral Club Gem and Mineral Show, this annual event features several operating layouts, including one to be raffled off, plus vendors and chats with area railroaders. At the Boulder County Fairgrounds, 9595 Nelson Road in Longmont. 303-774-8468.

Café de la Culture, the Venue for Visionaries
This new series of “salons” focuses on figures like Jane Austen, Leonardo Da Vinci and the medieval Sufi poet Rumi, each time presenting an expert speaker, appropriate cuisine, and artists from belly dancers and madrigal singers to aromatherapists. Estes Park Duck Race
May 5: Now in its 24th year, this event helps raise funds for charities and nonprofits in the Estes Valley. Live entertainment at noon is followed by the duck race at 1pm. Begins at Nicky’s Resort and ends at Riverside Plaza in downtown Estes.

Flatirons Mineral Club Gem and Mineral Show
Dec. 9-11: Annual event showcases vendors, exhibits, lectures and classes in rocks, minerals, jewelry and lapidary equipment, plus children’s activities like gold panning, a scavenger hunt, mineral identification and site excavation. Geeks Who Drink
Geeks Who Drink hosts free, live pub quizzes at more than 60 bars and restaurants in the region, including some weekly sessions in Boulder. Teams compete in eight rounds of trivia questions for a chance to win cash and prizes.

Niwot Classic Car Show
May 18: Find classic hot rods and muscle cars displayed all throughout Niwot, all day long, during this popular “blast from the past” annual event.

Rails in the Rockies
Feb. 18-19: Huge model railroad show covers 16,000 square feet displaying more than 40 layouts in all gauges from G to Z. The event also has modeling and scenery clinics, vendor booths, and children’s activities. At the Estes Park Conference Center, 201 S. St. Vrain Ave

StarFest
April 20-22: StarFest is an annual Denver convention encompassing all aspects of popular media, film and television. It features more than 100 activities, like film studio presentations, onstage Q&A sessions, costume and talent contests, film festivals, art shows, collectible merchandise, educational seminars and fan club presentations. In conjunction with StarFest, participants can also visit Robocon (“The place where robots meet”), ComicFest and HorrorFest. At the Marriott and Hilton hotels in the Denver Tech Center.

WinterSkate
There are now three local places to enjoy old-fashioned outdoor ice skating during the winter. Visit the website for hours, rates and more details about each location below. SummerSkate roller skating begins May 4 at the two asterisked locations.

  • Through March 4: WinterSkate in Historic Downtown Louisville, in the Steinbaugh Pavilion at 824 Front St. (the largest outdoor ice skating rink in the country)
  • Through April 1: WinterSkate in The Village at FlatIron Crossing* (next door to Bloom)
