Backdoor Theater
Fridays and Saturdays: The Backdoor Theater in Nederland is a nonprofit, 260-seat film venue that screens first-run, foreign and classic movies most Fridays and Saturdays at 7pm. Admission is only $6 for adults and $3 for kids, and concessions start at 50 cents. At Nederland Community Center, 740 Highway 72 North. Sign up to get a weekly email schedule. 

Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival World Tour
Feb. 28-29: The best films from this huge festival go on tour around the world to more than 30 countries. Boulder screenings are at the REI store, 1789 28th St., www.rei.com/stores/boulder. Other Colorado locations in February and March include Breckenridge, Denver and Fort Collins.

Bent Lens Cinema
Boulder’s only GLBTQ film society presents screenings and other events around town.

Boedecker Theater
The plush new 60-seat art-house theater at the Dairy Center for the Arts, outfitted with stadium seating and surround sound, screens high-quality cinema, including indie films and live broadcasts of opera and ballet. Memberships are available and include discounted ticket prices and invitations to special events.

Boulder County Democratic Party Movie Nights
Dec. 9 & 16; Jan. 12: BCDP offers a free film series exploring the most urgent issues of our times. Each event features panelists, field experts and elected officials, and participants will have the opportunity to weigh in on the 2012 BCSP issues platform. 6:30pm at the BCDP Headquarters, 1725 Walnut St.

Boulder International Film Festival
Feb. 16-19: Named one of the “25 Coolest Film Festivals in the World,” BIFF brings film fans and filmmakers together for a four-day celebration of the art of cinema. The event also includes forums, parties, workshops and Q&A discussions. Past celebrity guests have included Oliver Stone, Blythe Danner and Alec Baldwin. At various locations around Boulder; check online after the first of the year for a schedule and more details.

Boulder Public Library Cinema Program
Free movie screenings take place several nights a week in the library’s Canyon Theater, 1000 Canyon Blvd., usually at 6:30pm. Special “Babies & Blockbusters” events are baby-friendly outings where little ones are free to fuss, cry and coo. Boulder Theater
The Boulder Theater, at 2032 14th St., hosts numerous film screenings throughout the year and also hosts several film festivals; check website for ticket info. 303-786-7030.

Broomfield Independent Film Series
This nonprofit organization supports filmmakers who reside in the Broomfield area or produce their films there. The group also presents VidFest, open to youth in grades 6-12. Dec. 8 is “Colorado Creatives,” a screening of culturally diverse and locally produced short films.

Changes in Latitude Travel Program
Tuesdays: The Changes in Latitude Travel Store offers free travel films, slide shows and photo presentations at 7pm at 2525 Arapahoe Ave. See the website for a complete list of winter/spring programs.

Chautauqua Silent Film Series
Chautauqua’s popular Silent Film Series has been going strong for more than 25 years. Movies begin at 7:30pm in the Chautauqua Auditorium and feature lively accompaniment by either Hank Troy on piano or the Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra. Colorado Environmental Film Festival
Feb. 23-25: CEFF is an annual event that showcases world-class environmental films and also hosts forums with representatives from local and national companies. Screenings are at the American Mountaineering Center, 710 10th St. in Golden. Check in January for the schedule.

Colorado MahlerFest Film Presentation
May 18: Annual music festival, now in its 25th year, is hosting the Colorado premiere of Jason Starr’s documentary exploring Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony. 1-4pm; check the website for updated info about the CU venue.

Documentary Cinema Institute
DCI offers periodic screenings, resources and workshops for filmmakers in the metro area. Check online for current schedule and more details. 303-444-1351.

Festivus Film Festival
Jan. 12-15: Fifth annual festival is a nonprofit event dedicated to promoting high-quality indie films to Denver-area audiences. Screenings are at the Bug Theatre and the Oriental Theater in Denver; check the website for schedule and other updates.

Flic: Food, Libation and Independent Cinema
FLIC is Boulder’s homegrown, occasional and playful series of independent-film screenings. Come early for cocktails and cartoons, or stick around after the film for games like Mad Libs and Movie-oke. On Dec. 7, see “Oscar Shorts,” a collection of 2011’s best short films, at the Boulder Absinthe House, 1109 Walnut St.  

Indie Spirit Film Festival
April 19-22: The annual ISFF showcases features, shorts, documentaries and animation from independent filmmakers from around the world. Screenings are at the Colorado College campus in Colorado Springs.

International Film Series
Boulder’s first art-house film series began in 1941 and is still going strong, screening more than 100 films every academic year on the CU campus. Sign up for email notifications or download the smartphone app to stay updated.

Niwot Native American Film Festival
1st Fridays: This monthly film festival takes place during Niwot’s First Fridays Art Walks. Arapaho filmmaker Ava Hamilton, festival director, screens the films at Elysian Fields Auctions, 6924 79th St. in Niwot, from 7:30-9:30pm. Old Town Cinema
OTC is a not-for-profit roving film series dedicated to providing innovative film programming in Louisville. Monthly “Film.Food.Fun” events pair movies with food at local restaurants. See the website for updates, or “like” the group’s Facebook page.

Philosophy Film Series
Front Range Community College in Longmont hosts monthly weekday-afternoon screenings of thought-provoking films, followed by a discussion moderated by faculty members. Admission is free, but seating is limited. FRCC is at 2190 Miller Drive in Longmont.

Phipps IMAX Theater at Denver Museum of Nature and Science
Movies shown on the huge screen at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science’s huge IMAX screen make the action and adventure seem even more realistic and spine-tingling. 2001 Colorado Blvd. in Denver. 303-322-7009.

Rocky Mountain PBS Community Cinema
Community Cinema, held at 12 locations across Colorado, is a free monthly screening series featuring films from the Emmy Award–winning PBS series “Independent Lens.” Denver events are at the Starz FilmCenter, 900 Auraria Parkway.

Starz Filmcenter
Starz FilmCenter is a seven-screen independent movie house at the Tivoli Student Union of the Auraria Higher Education Center, Ninth Street and Auraria Parkway, Denver. Starz screens everything from first-run exclusives to art-house revivals both narrative and documentary, foreign and domestic. 303-595-3456.

Vail Film Festival
March 29-April 1: Festival events include film screenings, panel discussions, live music, nightly galas and filmmaker receptions.

Whole Foods Do Something Reel Film Festival
April: Held during Earth Month in more than 70 U.S. cities, with films that explore some of the critical environmental and food sustainability issues facing  communities today. See the website for details about Boulder/Denver screenings.
